AES-256 encryption with static key was implemented in the newest TR-9 firmware (v. 1080). The repeater also shows if the encryption was enabled. Some hams are quite reluctant if it comes to cryptography. As a privacy advocate, I’d like to give everyone a chance to encrypt their datastreams. Moreover, the ITU itself allows encryption for domestic QSOs:
“Transmissions between amateur stations of different countries shall not be encoded for the purpose of obscuring their meaning, except for control signals exchanged between earth command stations and space stations in the amateur-satellite service.”ITU Source
